There has been a dramatic increase in the number of pigeons nesting and living in Central Box Hill which may be linked to the number of people feeding them. Box Central shopping centre and the Box Hill mall have been particularly affected.
The increase in pigeon numbers is resulting in caustic pigeon droppings that damage building facades. The excessive pigeon waste is posing a safety risk to pedestrians as they try to navigate their way along pigeon-littered pavements, stairs and ramps. The pigeons are so numerous that they have been found inside the shopping centre looking for more readily available food sources in food courts.
Council previously posted signs in the area asking people not to feed the birds. But to increase public awareness of the problem the signs have been moved to a more prominent position this month to remind the community that feeding pigeons is an infringement of of the local law. Council will impose a $200 fine to anyone feeding the pigeons.
